Pace artist Liu Jianhua has been selected to participate in Viva Arte Viva, a group exhibition curated by Christine Macel. He will be exhibiting his 2014 work Square, which consists of 64 individual steel sheets and gold glazed porcelain pools. Last week, Tate Modern inaugurated a new impressive building. The “Switch House” is a 10-storey extension in the shape of a truncated pyramid designed by Swiss architects Herzog and de Meuron. It features a striking combination of raw industrial spaces and refined 21st century architecture. To celebrate the opening on 17 June, Tate presents a series of works from the permanent collection, including pieces by Chinese artists Liu Jianhua and Song Dong. On Friday 22 April 2016, 13.00-14.00, a free tour will be organised at the V&A museum, featuring the Shanghai-based artist Liu Jianhua. He will discuss his large-scale ceramic work ‘Trace’, which is newly installed in the Contemporary Ceramics Gallery (G141). Consisting of a series of porcelain ‘ink drops’, this work has recently been acquired by the V&A Museum courtesy of Mastercard. The talk will be conducted in Chinese with English translations.
The triennial “Echigo-Tsumari Art Field” is opening on 26 July. 100 international artists and groups, including Chinese artists Cai Guo Qiang, Liu Jianhua, Rong Rong and Inri will participate in this event. Contemporary British sculptor Antony Gormley, the most important performance artist Marina Abramović and the significant contemporary Russian artists Ilya & Emilia Kabakov will also bring their works to the show. Artist Liu Jianhua is bringing his work “Trace” to take part in USC Pacific Asia Museum’s “Reshaping Tradition: Contemporary Ceramics from East Asia”, a large scale group exhibition, on 11th September. The work will be part of the permanent collection at Pacific Asia Museum. At the same time, the Asian Art Museum in California has commissioned Liu Jianhua to create a piece of work. It will be exhibited in March 2016, and will be collected by the museum permanently.
Pace Beijing will be closed for National Day holidays on 28 - 29 September, 1 - 3 October, and 5 - 6 October. The solo exhibition Liu Jianhua: Square will be opened to public on 30 September and 4 October. Regular hours will resume on 7 October. Pace Hong Kong's solo exhibition, Xie Molin, will be closed on 1 - 2 October for National day and on the day following for Chung Yeung Festival. The gallery will reopen on October 4.
