Taking place amid Kaino’s inaugural Pace Gallery exhibition Bridge (Raise Your Voice in Silence), Pass the Baton: A Gathering will include a fireside chat focused on the role of art in affecting social change with Kaino and Olympian Tommie Smith, a longtime collaborator of the artist. The event will also feature a roundtable with leading civic figures Brea Baker, LaTosha Brown, Ilyasah Shabazz, and Nsé Ufot, presenting an opportunity for sharing experiences and creating new networks for activism. Examining a wide range of political, social, and environmental issues in his work, Kaino takes a multidisciplinary and collaborative approach to art making.Tommie Smith is the only man in the history of track and field to hold eleven world records simultaneously. During the historic 19th Olympiad in Mexico City in the summer of 1968, Smith ran with an injury and shattered the world record in the 200-meter men’s race to win the gold medal. During the award ceremony, Smith raised his fist to give a salute and then bowed his head in prayer, a silent protest and stand for liberation, unity, and human rights. This courageous, unexpected worldwide event propelled Smith into the spotlight as a human rights spokesman, activist, and symbol of African American pride at home and abroad. Brea Baker, Photography by Sydney Holmes Brea BakerBrea Baker is an activist and writer with a B.A. in Political Science from Yale University. Starting at the age of 17 as a student leader and now as the Chief Equity Officer at Inspire Justice, Brea has contributed to dozens of electoral and advocacy campaigns including the 2017 Women’s March (where she served as the youngest national organizer), the 2018 student walkouts against gun violence following the Parkland shooting, the campaign to #FreeMeekMill, and more. Additionally, Brea writes for leading publications including Harper’s Bazaar, ELLE, Parade Magazine, Refinery 29, and more commenting on race, gender, sexuality, and public safety. Her book, Rooted: The American Legacy of Land Theft & The Modern Movement for Black Land Ownership, will be published by One World (an imprint of Penguin Random House) in 2023. LaTosha Brown, Photography courtesy Black Voters Matter Fund LaTosha BrownLaTosha Brown is an award-winning visionary thought leader, institution builder, Cultural Activist and Artist, and Connector. She is a nationally recognized, “go-to” expert in Black Voting Rights and Voter Suppression, Black Women’s Empowerment, and Philanthropy. Her voice is the nexus between the Civil Rights Movement, the Black Power Movement, and Black Lives Matter. LaTosha is the Co-Founder of Black Voters Matter Fund and Black Voters Matter Capacity Building Institute. These initiatives are designed to boost Black voter registration and turnout, as well as increase power in marginalized, predominantly Black communities. Ilyasah Shabazz Ilyasah ShabazzIlyasah Shabazz is an award-winning author, educator and producer. She has authored five historical novels and has served as project advisor for the PBS award-winning film, Prince Among Slaves documentary. She is Co-Chairperson of the Malcolm X & Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial and Educational Center. In her work to preserve the legacy of her parents, she has dedicated herself to institution building and intergenerational leadership development with the tenants of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Nsé Ufot Nsé UfotNsé Ufot is the Chief Executive Officer of the New Georgia Project (NGP) and its affiliate, New Georgia Project Action Fund (NGP AF). Nsé leads both organizations with a data-informed approach and a commitment to developing tools that leverage technology to make it easier for every voter to engage in every election. Nsé and her team are also developing Georgia’s home-grown talent by training and organizing local activists across the state. She has dedicated her life and career to working on civil, human and workers’ rights issues and leads two organizations whose complementary aim is to strengthen Georgia’s democracy. Under Nsé’s leadership, NGP has registered nearly 600K Georgians to vote.
