Online Nina Katchadourian "Look Who’s Talking” From the ongoing series Sorted BooksFeb 10 – Mar 11, 2023 In (opens in a new window) Uncommon Denominator, Nina Katchadourian’s exhibition at the Morgan Library & Museum in New York, the interdisciplinary artist has staged a lively conversation between works from throughout her career, family artifacts, and objects and artworks culled from the depths of the Morgan’s vaults. On view from February 10 to May 28, the show includes a newly commissioned set of photographs from her “Sorted Books” project, which she began in 1993.For these works, the artist combs bookshelves belonging to an individual or institution, arranging selections of titles in sequences that create short phrases, stories, poems, and commentary. Katchadourian’s resulting photographs of books can be understood as portraits of the collector, and her past subjects have included artist Isamu Noguchi and writers William S. Burroughs and August Strindberg.For “Look Who’s Talking”—the series of “Sorted Books” photographs that anchors Katchadourian’s exhibition at the Morgan—the artist delved into the institution’s Carter Burden Collection of American Literature. Amassed by the politician and arts patron between 1978 and 1995, these holdings reflect Burden’s interest in both high and low literary traditions. (Fourteen works from Katchadourian’s “Look Who’s Talking” series have entered the Morgan’s permanent collection.)“I loved finding a paperback detective novel with a provocative title beside an archival box housing a letter from John Steinbeck,” Katchadourian writes of her explorations in the collection. “Burden often sought out every edition of a given title, and I sometimes took advantage of his ‘repeats’ to construct groupings featuring a reiterated word or phrase.”This special online exhibition, which runs through March 11, spotlights the photographs in “Look Who’s Talking.” Works by Sylvia Plath, Toni Morrison, Raymond Carver, Richard Wright, Allen Ginsberg, Tennessee Williams, and other writers are present in Katchadourian’s idiosyncratic combinations. My process hasn’t changed much since then: I start by sorting through a collection of books, selecting particular titles and arranging them into stacked groups so that their titles on the spines can be read in sequence as short sentences, phrases, or narratives.
