Nov 10 – Dec 18, 2021

Produced on the occasion of Pace’s New York survey Wifredo Lam: The Imagination at Work, this book examines the formal and thematic complexities of Wifredo Lam’s paintings and sculptures.

Foregrounding the radical nature of the Cuban artist’s syncretic visual language, the publication traces the evolution of his practice and the ways he challenged the Eurocentricity of Modernism.

A foreword by art historian Alexander Alberro along with essays by art historians Kaira M. Cabañas and Samantha A. Noël and writer Alexandra Chang offer contemporary analyses of the work of a dynamic 20th century figure, shedding light on the social and political contexts in which Lam created his art, as well as the cultural and religious sources that informed his practice. In addition to images of Lam’s paintings, works on paper, and rarely seen bronze sculptures, the publication features a detailed chronology of the artist’s life written by Latin American art scholar and curator Michaëla de Lacaze Mohrmann, who made curatorial contributions to Pace’s exhibition.

Rather than telling the story of one community or influence, Lam is part of the history of the Caribbean and its embedded transcultural histories.

With his purposeful combinations and blurring of oppositions, he suggests how gender, sexuality, and cultural and racial identities interlock in nonhierarchical ways to be mutually impactful, transformative, and even progressive.
