Paper as Materiality: Antoni Tàpies’s Radical Aesthetic Propositions

Published Thursday, Dec 11, 2025

Step inside Antoni Tàpies: On Paper, a survey of the Spanish artist's works on paper spanning seven decades of his career, on view at our New York gallery through December 20, 2025. Here, Pace's Chief Curator Oliver Shultz takes us through the presentation, shedding light on the historical, political, and ethical underpinnings of Tàpies‘s deeply experimental oeuvre. A self-taught artist who developed a unique visual language centering on exchanges among symbols, gestures, and materials, Tàpies imbued his work with personal resonances and references to political and social struggles in his native Catalonia and Spain, meditating on the human condition in compositions that have inspired future generations of artists.
