Space Shifters

Hayward Gallery, London

September 26, 2018 – January 6, 2019

Opening on 26th September at Hayward Gallery in London, Space Shifters will explore viewers’ perception of their surroundings and notions of gallery’s distinctive architecture. The exhibition will also engage with an alternative history of minimalism: not a geometric, austere, serial minimalism, but one with a more alluring, elegant and playful sensibility.

Robert Irwin’s work Untitled (Acrylic Column), 1969–2011, a monumental and majestic clear acrylic column, will rise over 4.5 metres in the Hayward’s upper gallery. Irwin, who began his career as a painter in the 1950s and became a pioneer of the “Light and Space” movement in the 1960s, has, through a continual breaking down of the frame, come to regard the role of art as “conditional”—working within and responding to the specific surrounding world of experience.
