Living With Ghosts
Jul 8 – Aug 5, 2022

Featuring republished texts by seminal theorists of the 20th and 21st centuries, as well as newly commissioned essays by some of today’s leading artists and writers, Living With Ghosts: A Reader is an important, thought-provoking work published to coincide with the exhibition guest curated by Kojo Abudu at Pace in London.

Living With Ghosts explores the ways the unresolved traumas of Africa’s colonial past, and its unfulfilled project of decolonisation, continue to haunt the present global order. The reader further expands on these complex ideas through philosophical, historical, and literary approaches. Reprinted texts by thinkers such as Achille Mbembe, C.L.R. James, and Sabelo J. Ndlovu-Gatsheni explore the historical experiences of the African postcolony and the problematics of decolonisation. Meditations on artists including John Akomfrah and Abraham Oghobase provide engaging entry points to their multi-layered artistic practices. Also featured is an in-depth conversation between Bouchra Khalili and Kojo Abudu.

[B]y actively feeding and communing with these ghosts, in other words, by living with them, we develop an expanded and layered historical consciousness of the catastrophic global present while also nurturing our desire for, and anticipation of, a more just future.

These ‘magical’ registers of haunting pulled me into the logics of animist technology, a convergence of objects, techniques, substances and subjects that enable communing across spatio-temporal distances and recognise the interdependent relatedness of the physical and spirit realms.
