Films In Conversation Leo Villareal and Marc Glimcher at Pace Tokyo Published Thursday, Sep 25, 2025 This new film takes you inside Golden Game, artist Leo Villareal's first solo exhibition in Japan, on view at our Tokyo gallery through October 18. Joined by Pace CEO Marc Glimcher, Villareal speaks about his latest series of wall-mounted works, which combine elements of abstract painting, sculpture, and architecture. Discussing the varied optical effects at play across his works' foregrounds and backgrounds, the artist explains that "each one of the pieces has its own personality." Here, he also speaks about the inspiration for the title of this body of work, which comes from a book on 17th century alchemical engravings. "I've always been interested in esoteric knowledge and geometries and rules. There are a lot of generative things happening when I'm making the work—adding light, subtracting light. In a way, it's almost like working with a bonsai."
