    Pace Gallery is pleased to present Tara Donovan, an exhibition of recent work by the artist. The exhibition will be on view from January 26 through March 26, 2017, at 229 Hamilton Avenue in Palo Alto, California. An opening reception for the artist will be held on Wednesday, January 25th from 4 to 7 p.m.

    The exhibition includes several examples from Composition (Cards), the artist’s newest series of works that are constructed by stacking styrene cards, which are then adhered together and reoriented vertically. Each convergence of strategically stacked cards creates an abstract graphic composition that relies equally on both the edges of the cards and the spaces created between their variegated layers. The resulting dynamic patterns of parallel lines establish an interplay between positive and negative spaces on the surface to produce oscillating shadows that viewers perceive as subtle seismic shifts as they move around each work.

    Also, included in the exhibition is a newly completed untitled sculpture made of tens of thousands of clear acrylic rods. Using a technique the artist first developed in 2010, the work is comprised of units varying in length and radiating in an organization akin to crystalline structures. The intermingling units entangle the arrays and seem to distort the forms while accelerating the directionality of the rods into the surrounding space.

    The exhibition also plays host to some of the newest examples from the artist’s Drawing (Pins) series. Donovan began using thousands of nickel-plated steel pins in 2009, pushing them into white gatorboard to create shimmering gradients through clustering and interaction with light. The works negotiate a space between sculpture and drawing, using three-dimensional objects to create what, at certain distances, seems to be a two-dimensional field. Donovan expands upon her earlier works in the series by inscribing an underlying geometry into the structure of the newer drawings, which reveals itself through the perceptual shifts that occur when viewing the work from different vantage points. When viewed from the side, the perpendicular lengths between the pinheads and gatorboard converge, generating a density of linear forms that articulates implied geometries.

    For the last twenty years, Tara Donovan has used simple, mass-produced materials and objects to explore the transformative effects of accumulation and aggregation. The result is a body of work known for its otherworldly environments, hazy topographies and organic structures. As in all of her works, Donovan spends months or even years searching for a method of assembly that allows the simple and immutable characteristics of the chosen material to generate complex, emergent phenomena. The viewer cycles between perception of the parts versus the whole and of the forms themselves relative to the light and space that surrounds them. Her work draws on both Minimalist and formalist histories, while creating a radically new practice embracing complexity and iterative processing.

    Tara Donovan (b. 1969, New York) creates large-scale installations and sculptures made from everyday objects. Known for her commitment to process, she has earned acclaim for her ability to discover the inherent physical characteristics of an object and transform it into art. Donovan’s many accolades include the prestigious MacArthur Foundation “Genius” Award (2008) and first annual Calder Prize (2005), among others. For over a decade, numerous museums have mounted solo exhibitions of Donovan’s work including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (2007), Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego (2004 and 2009), Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston (2008), UCLA Hammer Museum (2004), and Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. (1999). Donovan’s first European exhibition was presented in 2013 at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebæk, Denmark, and traveled to the Arp Museum Bahnhof Rolandseck, Remagen, Germany. Her more recent solo exhibitions include the Parrish Museum, Watermill, NY (2015) and Jupiter Artland, Edinburgh, Scotland (2015). Her work is included in the collections of major institutions such as Indianapolis Museum of Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art,, and Whitney Museum of American Art, and , among many others.

    Pace has represented Donovan since 2005. This is the ninth solo exhibition of her work at the gallery.
