He examines relationships between the individual and the whole, illustrating how parts aggregate, like cells, to create complex and dynamic structures. His practice spans painting, drawing, sculpture, and installation, as well as various facets of design and collaborative projects through his Kyoto-based studio, SANDWICH. Nawa’s use of synthetic compounds underscores a recurring theme wherein materials such as polyurethane foam, translucent beads, ink, paint, glue, and silicone oil become devices that prompt an awareness of our mediated environment.Embracing an expansive definition of what sculpture can be, Nawa cultivates immersive perceptual environments that foreground materiality while engaging themes of life, the cosmos, and the evolving interplay between creative sensibility and technology. These themes resonate throughout his practice, notably in his PixCell and Prism series (2002–), centered on the concept of the cell as a symbol of the information age, as well as his Direction series (2012–), Foam series (2013–), Force series (2015–), and Biomatrix series (2023–).Nawa practice extends into the realm of architecture, exemplified by projects such as the art pavilion Kōtei (2016) at the Shinshoji Zen Museum and Garden, Hiroshima. In 2018, his sculptural work Throne (2018) was presented as part of a special exhibition at Musée du Louvre, Paris, where it was unveiled beneath I.M. Pei's iconic glass pyramid. In 2023, Nawa’s twenty-five-meter-tall outdoor sculpture Ether (Equality) (2023) was permanently installed on Île Seguin along the Seine River in France.Since 2015, Nawa has collaborated with Belgian choreographer Damien Jalet to produce a trilogy of performance works: VESSEL (2016), Planet [wanderer] (2021), and Mist (2022). This interdisciplinary partnership continued with the premiere of their fourth work, Mirage [transitory], in Hakata, Japan, in 2024. In May 2025, a theatrical iteration titled Mirage debuted in Geneva and has since toured internationally.Nawa received a BA (1998) and a PhD (2003) from Kyoto City University of Arts.
