Pace Gallery and Black Lunch Table present a livestreamed Pace Live conversation between Kimberly Drew, Kimberly Annece Henderson, and Kameelah Janan Rasheed on the occasion of [action=query]: Black Arts and Black Aesthetics in New York

Informed by Carolyn Fowler’s Black Arts and Black Aesthetics: A Bibliography, this event aims to explore interpretations, embodiments, and appraisals of Black Aesthetics through an interdisciplinary conversation. By conceptualizing the archive as a site of both history and futurity, we are invited to engage citation as a devotional practice and consider the ways in which Black knowledge production is a communal action.

Presented in the library on the first floor of Pace's New York gallery, [action=query]: Black Arts and Black Aesthetics is the culmination of inaugural Wikimedia Fellow Kristen Owens's self-guided research into the Black American and Black diasporic artists who have been represented by or exhibited with Pace during its 60-year history. Styled as a reading room, this exhibition provides visitors the opportunity to engage with a selection of catalogues, essays, and other key publications and archival materials curated by Owens and focused on Black art and visual culture.

Kimberly Drew

Kimberly Drew began her career as an intern at the Studio Museum in Harlem, which later inspired her to launch the popular Tumblr blog Black Contemporary Art in 2011. She has since held positions on the communications teams of the Studio Museum, the Met, and the gallery Lehmann Maupin. A leading voice in contemporary art, she is the author of the international bestseller This Is What I Know About Art and the anthology Black Futures, which she co-edited with Jenna Wortham. Drew’s writing has appeared in Vogue, Curbed, Teen Vogue, and Vanity Fair, and in January 2022 she published an essay titled “The Misguided Empathy of Dana Schutz’s Open Casket” with New York magazine. She is the host of Hulu’s Your Attention Please podcast and her personal web series Black Power Lunch Hour. Most recently, she worked as NFT Residency Curator with the platform Voice.

Kimberly Annece Henderson

Kimberly Annece Henderson is a writer and curator based in New York City. Her work centers genealogy and Black American lineages through archival photography and historical preservation; which includes facilitating digital projects for the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, in Harlem. Her curatorial work is featured in the 1619 Project book, and her forthcoming picture book, entitled Dear Yesteryear, will be published by Penguin Random House March, 7, 2023.

Kameelah Janan Rasheed

A learner, Kameelah Janan Rasheed (she/they), grapples with the poetics-pleasures-politics of Black knowledge production, information technologies, [un]learning, and belief formation. They are a recipient of a 2022 Schering Stiftung Award for Artistic Research, a 2022 Creative Capital Award, and a 2021 Guggenheim Fellowship in Fine Arts. Rasheed is the author of three artist’s books: An Alphabetical Accumulation of Approximate Observations (Endless Editions, 2019), No New Theories (Printed Matter, 2019), and the digital publication Scoring the Stacks (Brooklyn Public Library, 2021). Their writing has appeared in Triple Canopy, The New Inquiry, Shift Space, Active Cultures, and The Believer. They are an adjunct instructor at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, a Critic at Yale School of Art, Sculpture, and a Mentor-in-Residence with NEW Inc. Rasheed is represented by NOME Gallery in Berlin, Germany.
