William Monk

Psychopomp

William Monk’s first institutional solo exhibition in Asia, which opened at the Long Museum in Shanghai in January 2024 and traveled to the Sifang Art Museum in Nanjing, China in the spring, is on view at the He Art Museum in Shunde, China through November 3. Now in the final leg of its run, William Monk: Psychopomp brings together several bodies of work—including paintings from The Ferryman, Smoke Ring Mountain, and Son of Nowhere series as well as large-scale, floating tondos—made by the artist between 2019 and 2023.

Guiding viewers into new realms, Monk’s atmospheric and energetic paintings are replete with vibrant, otherworldly forms, and his practice is deeply engaged with the rich tradition and history of the medium. Inviting both physical and psychic connections between the viewer and the canvas, Monk’s works transform and transcend the environments in which they are exhibited.

Over the course of Psychopomp’s journey across three venues in China, his works—some of which are wall-bound, while others are suspended, floating from ceilings—have moved through very different, idiosyncratic architectural spaces. In their current presentation at the He Art Museum, Monk’s paintings respond to the institution’s undulating curves, a visual exchange that speaks to the push and pull of physical, psychological, and spiritual forces in our universe.
