Lens, France

Sonia Gomes gave up her career as a lawyer in the 1990s to devote her time to art. She enrolled in the Escola Guignard art department at the Minas Gerais State University (UEMG), where she studied between 1995 and 1997. Sonia Gomes’ sculptural objects draw on natural elements, as well as narratives and practices that are historically associated with women and Afro-Brazilian tradition.

Created as part of lille3000’s partnership with the France-Brazil season, the exhibition will present works by Sonia Gomes in the glass pavilion at the Louvre-Lens. Known for sculptures that combine sewing and embroidery with recycled materials, Sonia Gomes lives and works in Sao Paulo. From Sao Paulo to Paris, via Venice and New York… her photographs and textile sculptures have travelled the world (She notably exhibited at the Vatican during the Venice Biennale; her work is currently showcased at the Mendes Wood DM gallery in Paris).
