Storm King Art Center Announces Sonia Gomes Solo Show, Acquisitions by Arlene Shechet and Lee Ufan

Published Tuesday, Dec 10, 2024

Sonia Gomes will present her first US museum solo exhibition at Storm King Art Center in May 2025. The sculpture park has also announced permanent acquisitions of works by Arlene Shechet and Lee Ufan.

Artist Sonia Gomes will open her first-ever museum solo show in the United States at Storm King Art Center in May 2025. Known for her use of textiles and everyday materials in complex assemblages, Gomes gained international recognition when the late curator Okwui Enwezor included her work in the 2015 Venice Biennale. In 2018, she became the first living Afro-Brazilian woman artist to have a monographic show at the Museu de Arte de São Paulo (MASP).

Born in 1948 in Caetanópolis—which is located in the state of Minas Gerais in southeastern Brazil and was once a textile hub—Gomes has cultivated a practice anchored by her deft and meticulous manipulation of varied materials. Featuring juxtaposing forms, colors, and media, Gomes’s abstract assemblages have pushed the boundaries of conventional sculpture, forging connections between memory and abstract imagery.

Newly acquired works by artists Arlene Shechet, whose acclaimed exhibition Arlene Shechet: Girl Group was presented at Storm King this year, and Lee Ufan will also be installed in the 500-acre sculpture park in May.

As part of the opening of its 2025 season, Storm King will unveil upgrades to its campus made through its $53 million capital project.
