Installation view, Richard Tuttle: 18x24, Mar 17 – Apr 29, 2023, Pace Gallery, New York © Richard Tuttle Museum Exhibitions Richard Tuttle Half-Light Long-term viewDia BeaconBeacon, New York For more than 50 years, Richard Tuttle has been loosening the boundaries between painting, poetry, and sculpture to realize an eccentric body of materially light, conceptually rich work. Conceived in close dialogue with Tuttle, this exhibition presents two recent series, the planar 18 × 24 (2022–23) and the scattered Good Idea (2025), which the artist realized in his New Mexico and Maine residences, respectively. Continuing Tuttle’s lifelong exploration of the nexus between the verbal and the visual, each acrylic-painted Styrofoam element in the 18 × 24 series originated from a word drawing on an 18-by-24-inch sheet of paper. Ranging from entirely abstract forms to glyph-like shapes reminiscent of graphic notations, the works hang directly over their corresponding word drawings, at once riddled by and overriding their linguistic source. Conversely, the Good Idea works embody the state of being in the world. Composed of reclaimed everyday materials, the works float to fill the wall or interact with the floor, each articulating a different relationship with its parts and the architecture that supports them.
