Raqib Shaw

Raqib Shaw: Reinventing the Old Masters will be on view at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh, from 19 May – 28 October, 2018.

In the exhibition, eight works by Raqib Shaw will be shown, alongside two paintings which have long obsessed him: Joseph Noel Paton’s The Quarrel of Oberon and Titania (1849) and Lucas Cranach’s An Allegory of Melancholy (1528). 

In 2016 Shaw painted a loose variant of Paton’s extraordinary fairy picture and his version after the Cranach painting has been in progress for some months and is due to be finished in time for the display. This is the first time Shaw’s work has been exhibited in Scotland.

Patrick Elliott, Chief Curator at the Gallery of Modern Art, will chair a conversation between featured artist Raqib Shaw and Sir Norman Rosenthal, former Exhibitions Secretary at the Royal Academy, London, on the occasion of the opening of the exhibition on Friday, May 18 from 4–5 PM in the Hawthornden Lecture Theatre.
