Qiu Xiaofei: Divination
Nov 5 – Dec 18, 2021

Produced on the occasion of Qiu Xiaofei’s 2021 solo exhibition Divination with Pace in New York, this publication focuses on the rich historical, political, cultural, and spiritual allusions in the artist’s paintings.

The artist’s recent show with the gallery took its title from a famous chapter of The Songs of Chu, an ancient Chinese poetry anthology, and a quote from this text is printed on the back cover of the new book.

Featured in the catalogue are writings by novelist, poet, artist, and art critic Travis Jeppesen, critic Yan Chi, and Qiu himself. Offering incisive analyses of Qiu’s approach to painting and the content of his work, these essays are accompanied by images of the artist’s fantastical compositions, with details recorded on foldouts.

In Qiu’s universe, the past remains with us, whether in the form of ghosts that materialize before our eyes or the burden of history weighing upon our back as we contemplate both the present and the future.

Like the performance of an instrumentalist in music, the manner in which any artist employs painterly languages on canvas is highly dependent on his or her subconscious mind.
