DRIFT: EGO

A Live Performance by Lee Ranaldo

This event has been cancelled, please read our full statement below.

As part of Pace Live, Lee Ranaldo—American musician, visual artist, and co-founder of alternative rock band Sonic Youth—performs a unique musical duet with DRIFT’s sculptural installation EGO.*

Grounded in process-based, minimal, and improvisational music, Ranaldo’s guitar performance pushes the limits of string and sound in relation to the programmable and threaded silhouette of DRIFT’S animated installation. This unique coming together of live sound and kinetic sculpture touches upon the connections between sight and sound, suggesting future developments for artificial emotional intelligence.

*As a result of the progression of COVID-19, and in keeping with recommendations from the World Health Organization and the Center for Disease Control in ensuring the safety of our communities, we have made the decision to cancel tonight's staging of DRIFT: EGO, A Live Performance by Lee Ranaldo.

While we firmly believe that communal engagement with art and music is crucial in these challenging times, our first priority is to keep our guests, artists, and staff safe.

We'd like to extend our gratitude to the artists and staff involved in this event for their efforts in bringing together such a dynamic program, and to you for your interest in playing a part in it.

The staff of Pace Gallery wishes you good health and calm as we navigate this new territory together.

Lee Ranaldo

Lee Ranaldo co-founded Sonic Youth in 1981 and has been active in the New York and international music and art scenes for the past thirty-five years as a composer, performer, and producer. He is also a visual artist and has published several books of journals, poetry, and writings on music. His newest LP, Names of North End Women, was released in February 2020 by Mute Records and his collaborative quartet album with Jim Jarmusch was released by Trost Records in May 2019. Recent live performances with partner Leah Singer have been large-scale, multi-projection sound and light events with suspended electric guitar phenomena, challenging the traditional performer/audience relationship. Ranaldo’s artwork has been exhibited internationally, with a survey show of selected works entitled Lost Ideas presented at Stadsmuseum ‘t Schippershof in Menen, Belgium in October 2017. He lives and works in New York City.

DRIFT

Dutch artists Lonneke Gordijn (b. 1980) and Ralph Nauta (b. 1978) founded DRIFT in 2007. With a multi-disciplinary team of sixty-four members, they create experiential sculptures, installations, and performances.

DRIFT manifests the phenomena and hidden properties of nature with the use of technology in order to learn from the earth’s underlying mechanisms and to re-establish our connection to it. With both depth and simplicity, their work illuminates parallels between man-made and natural structures through deconstructive, interactive, and innovative processes. The artists raise fundamental questions about what life is and explore a positive scenario for the future. DRIFT brings people, space, and nature to the same frequency, uniting audiences with experiences that inspire a reconnection to our planet.
