Calder: Small Sphere and Heavy Sphere

Daily Activations at 540 West 25th Street

Tuesday—Saturday

12:30 PM, 5:15 PM

Alexander Calder's Small Sphere and Heavy Sphere, pictured above, is one of the various sculptures now on view in the first floor gallery at 540 West 25th Street in New York.

The work, along with five more of Calder's renowned mobiles, will be activated in the gallery each day at 12:30 PM and 5:15 PM, Tuesday through Saturday, providing visitors with a rare opportunity to experience works as the artist intended—set in motion by motors or air currents, and further animated by touch.

As philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre remarked, “The movements of Calder’s mobiles have a life of their own," and these daily activations are designed to invite viewers to slow down and experience the works in real time.
