This collaboration will comprise a series of symposia in New York in 2026 and a landmark New York exhibition at Pace in 2027. As a prelude to their collaboration, Pace will present Modigliani’s 1918 painting Jeune fille aux macarons (Young Woman with Hair in Side Buns), which is included in Restellini’s catalogue raisonné, on its booth at Art Basel Paris this month. The six-volume Modigliani catalogue raisonné—authored by art historian and leading Modigliani scholar Marc Restellini and distributed by Yale University Press—is the culmination of work amassed since he first began his research in 1985. For this monumental project, Restellini has made use of scientific and technological tools, including spectrometry, carbon 14, infrared, and X-ray imaging, that were not available when the Italian scholar Ambrogio Ceroni produced his Modigliani catalogue raisonné between 1958 and 1970. Through scientific, stylistic, and documentary analyses, Restellini has authenticated some 100 Modigliani works—half of which were already in prominent museum collections—that were not included in Ceroni’s volumes. Restellini has also excluded 15 works that were previously included in Ceroni’s catalogue raisonné because these works did not meet Restellini’s criteria for authentication. Institut Restellini, 2026 Volume one of Restellini’s catalogue raisonné gives a full explanation of his methodology for authentication, and volume two provides a full chronology of Modigliani’s life and body of work. Volumes three through five contain Modigliani’s paintings, each represented by a full-page reproduction accompanied by complete provenance, exhibition history, and bibliography. Volume six comprises all the indexes concerning the data used in the catalogue, as well as a technical and iconographic index.Ahead of its worldwide release in 2026, Restellini’s Modigliani catalogue raisonné will be unveiled at this year’s Frankfurter Buchmesse, which runs from October 15 to 19. On October 24, Restellini will participate in a conference in Paris—organized by Drouot in partnership with the Société Internationale des Catalogues Raisonnés (CRIS)—where he will speak about his catalogue raisonné. Pace—which will organize a series of symposia on Modigliani in collaboration with the Institut Restellini in New York in 2026—will present a major exhibition of the artist’s work at its New York gallery in 2027. Curated by Restellini, this presentation will highlight the newly authenticated works in the catalogue raisonné, featuring loans from international museums.Renowned for its rigorous and scholarly exhibitions of 20th century art around the world, Pace has been active in the world of catalogues raisonnés for almost two decades. The gallery’s CEO Marc Glimcher conceived of and co-founded Artifex Press, the first digital catalogue raisonné company, in 2009. Artifex Press became part of the nonprofit Cahiers d'Art Institute in 2021, and it has produced catalogues raisonnés on Agnes Martin, Lucas Samaras, Jim Dine, Tim Hawkinson, Sol LeWitt, and other artists since its establishment.Marc Restellini says:“After a long journey of over 30 years, we are very pleased to finally present the catalogue raisonné of Amedeo Modigliani’s paintings. We are very proud that it is distributed by Yale University Press and delighted to have found a partner of Pace's stature to relay this work. We wish to thank Marc Glimcher, whose experience with catalogues raisonnés is obviously an essential asset, for his support. We hope this collaboration will aid this catalogue raisonné and its methodology to become the standard for future publications.”Marc Glimcher, CEO of Pace Gallery, says:“Marc Restellini’s Modigliani catalogue raisonné is not only the definitive publication on the artist—it is also setting a new standard for all catalogues raisonnés. His groundbreaking methodology and pioneering use of science and technology as part of this decades-long project involving dozens of experts around the world has led to the authentication of a total of 424 works by the artist, many of which we are thrilled to exhibit at our New York gallery in 2027. We look forward to continuing to work closely with Marc, the Institut Restellini, and Yale University Press as we look ahead to the publication of the catalogue raisonné in March.”Mark Eastment, Editorial Director, Museum and Institutional Partnerships, Art and Architecture, Yale University Press London, says:“I am delighted that in 2026 we will distribute Marc Restellini’s long-awaited catalogue raisonné of Modigliani’s oil paintings. The culmination of well over three decades of intensive global research and scholarship, this will be a landmark in the field. Yale University Press has an unparalleled reputation in the field, having published or distributed many award- winning and groundbreaking catalogues raisonnés. This exceptional account of the works of Modigliani will establish itself as both a fundamental work on the artist and a remarkable contribution to 20th century art history.” Read More About the Institut RestelliniFounded in 2015, the Institut Restellini stands at the forefront of innovation in art historical research and documentation, by integrating scientific methods and the most advanced technologies with traditional stylistic and historical analysis.
