"I was driving into the driveway of our house in Montauk and looked up and saw wild beach roses growing through the trees. These roses were smaller than the ones I had painted before that I’d seen at Van Gogh's grave. They also had a cerulean blue sky coming through them instead of the black wall of the cemetery in Auvers-sur-Oise. The character of the small roses exacerbated the pointillistic nature of nature and made the paintings seem to grow! I painted them the day Donald Trump lost the election and called them 'Victory!'"

Julian Schnabel

Julian Schnabel is known for his multidisciplinary practice that extends beyond painting to include sculpture and film. His use of preexisting materials not traditionally used in art making, varied painting surfaces and modes of construction were pivotal in the reemergence of painting in the United States.
