These roses were smaller than the ones I had painted before that I’d seen at Van Gogh's grave. They also had a cerulean blue sky coming through them instead of the black wall of the cemetery in Auvers-sur-Oise. The character of the small roses exacerbated the pointillistic nature of nature and made the paintings seem to grow!
