Dopamine, the last kiss of summer

Published Friday, August 30, 2024

The last kiss of summer, courtesy of Kylie Manning, delivered via Pace Playlists.

Featuring upbeat and eclectic music from Chappel Roan, FKA twigs, Jungle, and more, these sounds capture the hot days and breezy nights of the season. This playlist also includes musical selections by artists who will perform during a special event at Space K Korea on September 3, 2024 amongst Manning's large-scale paintings suspended in mid-air.

“Dopamine is most notably involved in helping us feel pleasure as part of the brain's reward system. Sex, dancing, smelling cookies baking in the oven—all these things can trigger dopamine release, or a 'dopamine rush," Manning says.

"...Once upon a time, people belabored over making mixed tapes for one another. They were absolute love letters—serenades, sexy bangers, odes to one another—when we were too shy to say things. That’s what I wanted to give you for the last kiss of summer.  I wanted to leave classical music out of this one and give you a little somethin' somethin' for shaking your tail feather."

"We have to self-medicate in the studio, leaning on music to lift up or slow down a painting, amp up or equalize. For my practice, the brain is best activated by reading with classical music in the background but the body is ignited with something with a bassy heartbeat. This one’s a little naughty, a little fun, and helps the work vibes. You could paint to it, dance to it, or whatever you want ;)"
