Pace is pleased to announce details of its presentation for the 2023 edition of Frieze New York, which runs from May 17 to 21 at The Shed.

The gallery’s booth will spotlight new and recent works on paper by Robert Nava, whose first-ever solo museum exhibition in Europe will open at the Hall Art Foundation’s Kunstmuseum Schloss Derneburg in Germany on June 17. Certain drawings that will be featured in Pace's presentation at Frieze New York are studies for new canvases Nava will show at the Kunstmuseum Schloss Derneburg. Highlighting the narrative throughlines between Nava’s drawing and painting practices, the gallery’s showcase at the fair will include loans and only selected works will be available for sale.

The works on paper on view at Frieze New York will shed light on Nava’s approach to sketching. While the artist uses sketches as part of his painting process, these artworks also represent an integral aspect of his practice as a whole. For Nava, sketching is a daily act of exploration and experimentation. In the pages of his small notebooks, he works through ideas that come to life in his phantasmagoric paintings of real and imagined creatures. “I usually begin every morning drawing in my sketchbooks, listening to music,” Nava said in an interview featured in Pace Publishing’s 2022 monograph on the artist. “The notebooks are pocket size, and I carry them with me often times.”

Pace’s focused presentation at Frieze New York will showcase drawings of various sizes, offering both large- and small-scale views of Nava’s fantastical world. The artist’s gestural, energetic style—which can be understood in conversation with Jean-Michel Basquiat, Jean Dubuffet, and Cy Twombly—will be on full view in this solo presentation. He finds inspiration for his distinctive visual lexicon of characters and forms in a diverse range of sources, from ancient art to mythology and religion to horror films, science fiction, video games, and cartoons. Despite their vibrancy and whimsy, Nava’s resulting works are imbued with philosophical and psychological import, tapping into a darker, more contemplative and existential space.

Many of the works on view at Frieze New York, as well as the paintings on view in Mirror Quest at the Kunstmuseum Schloss Derneburg, are united by the pictorial device of a gilded frame, referencing the opulent gilded frames that typically adorn Old Masters canvases. Inside these painted frames—rendered with loose and rapid applications of metallic paint to evoke rather than describe the intricately carved and gilded surfaces present in neoclassical galleries—Nava samples subject matter from across his practice. The compositions on view in both presentations transport the viewer into scenes populated by a range of creatures, landscapes, and objects at once mythic and every day.

During the run of Frieze New York, solo exhibitions by artists Nigel Cooke, Matthew Day Jackson, Grada Kilomba, Maysha Mohamedi, and Trevor Paglen—as well as the Nina Simone Childhood Home Auction Exhibition—will be on view at Pace’s Chelsea galleries.

About the Artist

Driven by his desire to “make new myths” responsive to our times, Robert Nava has created a chimerical world of metamorphic creatures, drawing inspiration from sources as disparate as prehistoric cave paintings, Egyptian art, and cartoons. Rendered through a raw, energetic mixing of spray paint, acrylics, and grease pencil, his large-scale paintings of fantastical beasts exude a playful candidness that defies the pretensions of high art and invites viewers to reconnect with the unbridled imagination of their childhoods.
