On the occasion of Gideon Appah’s first solo exhibition in the UK, How to Say Sorry in a Thousand Lights, Pace Live will stage a special night of poetry, music, and movement in response to Appah’s otherworldly, enigmatic paintings.

Celebrated poet and musician James Massiah will construct a soundscape with a live DJ set and poetry reading, and experimental performance artist Yen-Ching Lin will move through the gallery spaces, activating the paintings in new and compelling ways.

Stripped of the signifiers of identity, time, or place, Appah’s intentionally ambiguous paintings leave their narrative open to individual interpretation. The cinematic compositions cast the viewer in the role of voyeur, stumbling upon scenes that appear covert, private, or mysterious. Bringing these narratives to life through sound, poetry and dance, performers James Massiah and Yen-Ching Lin will offer creative responses to engage with the works.

Gideon Appah

Gideon Appah draws on childhood memories and dreams, as well as West African landscapes and popular culture for his dazzling, bold, and jewel-toned paintings. As a child, Appah’s first medium was charcoal, which his grandmother used to cook meals at home.

James Massiah

Dubbed by The Times ‘Fashion’s favourite poet,’ James Massiah is a writer and artist whose work explores ideas about sexuality, mortality and ethics through performance, poetry and visual media. His latest release ‘Natural Born Killers’ is a self-produced four track EP of downtempo, electronic music that was nominated ‘best alternative video UK’ at the 2019 Music Video Awards and won best music video at the Energa Camerimage film festival. The vinyl release of the single features a club version by Joy Orbison, one of James’ most avid supporters in the electronic music scene.

As a writer, James was commissioned to write and perform his piece ‘Omnipresence’ on Commonwealth Observance Day at Westminster Abbey, Broadcasted by the BBC. He has previously performed readings of his work at the Tate Modern, the Institute of Contemporary Arts and the Houses of Parliament. James has been profiled in Vogue, Dazed, I-D, GQ and worked with the likes of Dior, Louis Vuitton, Matches, Loewe and of the like.

Yen-Ching Lin

Yen-Ching is a performer, dance artist, and teacher. She is developing her own research and creative practices in Movement, Photography and Video.

Born in Taiwan, she studied at the Taipei National University of the Arts and then at the London Contemporary Dance School. She has collaborated with artists and companies such as Maresa von Stockert, Charles Linehan, Jonathan Lunn, and Didy Veldman, Theo Adams Company, Stefan Jovanović, balletLorent, Clod Ensemble, Hofesh Shechter Company and Bern Ballet under the direction of Stijn Celis, Akram Khan Company, AΦE, Waldorf project, Lee Mingwei, Alice Anderson, Punchdrunk, and Bullyache.
