Huong Dodinh On "Ascension," Her First Exhibition in Italy

Artist Huong Dodinh, who is known for her explorations of the fluidity of line, form, and light through elegant minimalist compositions, is presenting her first exhibition in Italy at the Sala delle Quattro Porte, Museo Correr in Venice through November 6. Coinciding with the 59th Venice Biennale, Dodinh’s presentation, titled Ascension, features a site-specific installation of 14 large-scale paintings surrounding a wooden 15th century sculpture of the Madonna della Misericordia.

In this new film, which features sweeping views of Ascension, Dodinh speaks about the formal qualities and spiritual underpinnings of the works in her Venice exhibition. “What I really wanted to do was to create a center—recenter a moment of peace, a moment of serenity, a moment of contemplation, where you can be yourself and not think about anything else.”
