Antoni Tàpies

Antoni Tàpies: From Object to Sculpture (1964–2009) presents nearly one hundred works spanning the artist’s entire sculptural practice, documenting his experiments with different mediums and materials, from the early objects and assemblages of the mid-1960s and 1970s to his final fire clay and bronze pieces. This oeuvre, produced over the course of five decades, constitutes a unique and independent body of work that allows us to trace Tàpies evolution as an artist.

Organized both chronologically and thematically, alternating between Tàpies’s development over time and an analysis of his subjects, materials, and methods, this show provides a clear vision of the characteristic elements of Tàpies’s artistic universe, from his concept of the wall to objects such as chairs, beds, or books—elements that are part of his personal vocabulary, which he transformed into sculptures of monumental proportions as well as subtle small-format pieces. The exhibition unveils Tàpies’s constant preoccupation with the sculptural problem and, for the first time, brings his sculpture face-to-face with itself.
