Created by way of the camera obscura, the nine photographs in this exhibition comprise direct-positive images as well as a contact print.

With an unparalleled passion for the medium and its history, Richard Learoyd explores new frontiers of photographic expression in his portraits and still lifes. Created by way of the camera obscura (Latin for "dark room"), the nine photographs in this exhibition comprise direct-positive images as well as a contact print.

Learoyd, who employs production techniques of bygone eras in his practice, occupies a unique place within contemporary photography. In his work, the artist borrows from the aesthetics of the finest figurative painters of the 19th and 20th centuries and draws inspiration from 17th century vanitas imagery. Imbued with art historical resonance, Learoyd's photographs possess an undeniable timelessness and universality.

Richard Learoyd

Richard Learoyd’s large-scale color and black-and-white portrait, landscape, and still-life photographs are celebrated for their balance of hyper-real and expressive qualities. Working with Ilfochrome color-reversal paper, Learoyd uses the camera obscura to render a single positive, unique image with minute detail without film negatives or digital technology.
