Adrian Ghenie: The Battle Between Carnival and Feast

Palazzo Cini, Venice

To coincide with the opening of the 2019 Venice Biennale, Palazzo Cini will present The Battle Between Carnival and Feast, an exhibition of new works by Romanian artist Adrian Ghenie, from April 19 through November 18, 2019. Organized in collaboration with Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac, the exhibition will be installed throughout the historic house museum's second floor galleries.

The exhibition’s title is inspired by Dutch painter Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s “Battle between Carnival and Lent," and suggests a link with the city of Venice through the reference to Carnival. Characterized by an experimental use of color with strong physical material connotations, Ghenie’s paintings depict personalities whose actions have influenced and continue to influence the course of the history of the world.

Through this approach, the artist thus clearly looks to tradition but does so without forgoing an interest in contemporary events.

For more information on the exhibition, please visit Palazzo Cini's (opens in a new window) website.
