On Thursday, January 10, from 6:30-7:30 PM, join NYU Associate Professor of Art History Meredith Martin in conversation with Artist Arlene Shechet at NeueHouse in New York City, where they'll discuss Shechet's newest installation, Full Steam Ahead, on view in Madison Square Park through April 28, 2019.
The title of Shechet’s installation takes inspiration from the famous order of Admiral David Glasgow Farragut at the Battle of Mobile Bay during the Civil War and addresses the Park’s occasionally overlooked but grand presentation of the Union Admiral, a late 19th-century monument by sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens with pedestal by Gilded Age architect Stanford White, one of the many permanent historic monuments in Madison Square Park. Shechet has long riffed on the sculptural pedestal in her work by literally incorporating it into an object or by supersizing it as an unexpected gesture.
Explore Full Steam Ahead through the lens of an art historian. Meredith Martin has published numerous articles, essays, and reviews on Bourbon regime architectural history and decoration as well as contemporary art. Her research interests focus on notions of space in modernity—its esthetics, its class implications, and its gendered norms and contradictions.
