Gray Matters opens May 20th at the Wexner Center for the Arts, and includes works by Pace artists Tara Donovan and Michal Rovner. The survey exhibition looks at the work of 37 contemporary female artists who have explored the practice of grisaille, a French term for working in shades of gray.
The exhibiton will feature works from Donovan's latest series, Compositions (Cards), wall-mounted framed works in various sizes that explore stratification as both a sculptural technique and a means to construct a two-dimensional picture plane. These works comprised Donovan's most recent solo exhibition at Pace, which ran from Feb 17 – Mar 18, 2017.
Two examples from Michal Rovner's recent solo exhibition, Night, will be included as well. In these works, Rovner's encounters with darkness generate nocturnal images, capturing moments that are immersed in shadows. The works reverberate an unfamiliar dimension, a sense of fear and alertness, primal powers and the night within us.
Gray Matters is on view from May 20th through July 30th, 2017 at the Wexner Center for the Arts at The Ohio State University in Columbus.
