Our Artists in Venice

We congratulate 10 of our artists on their projects in Venice during the Biennale di Venezia. Marking the 60th anniversary of her representation of the United States in Venice, Louise Nevelson will be the subject of a landmark exhibition at Procuratie Vecchie. Along with Kiki Kogelnik, Nevelson’s work will also be included in the 59th International Art Exhibition curated by Cecilia Alemani, titled The Milk of Dreams. Latifa Echakhch will present The Concert at the Swiss Pavilion. Acaye Kerunen will present Radiance: They Dream in Time at the Uganda National Pavilion. Huong Dodinh, Lee Kun-Yong, Hermann Nitsch, and Raqib Shaw will be the subject of major solo exhibitions, DRIFT will be featured in a group show titled Venice: CodeX, and JR will present his work Valeriia in the group exhibition This is Ukraine: Defending Freedom.

The Louise Nevelson Foundation presents a landmark exhibition curated by Dr. Julia Bryan-Wilson in the historic rooms of the Procuratie Vecchie. Marking the 60th anniversary of Nevelson's representation of the United States in Venice, this Official Collateral Event celebrates the artist’s pioneering career.

Radiance, They Dream in Time

Radiance, They Dream in Time considers the place of visual independence as expressed by Acaye Kerunen and Collin Sekajugo, two artists from Kampala, Uganda who draw and work with the notion of the people as the country rather than land.

The 59th International Art Exhibition curated by Cecilia Alemani, The Milk of Dreams, unfolds across several locations in Venice and features work by over 200 artists from 58 countries, including Kiki Kogelnik and Louise Nevelson.

As part of the MUVE Contemporaneo 2022 project, Museo Correr will host Huong Dodinh’s first exhibition in Italy, Ascension. The artist’s work will be displayed in the Sala delle Quattro Porte, an exhibition space exclusively dedicated to important female artists.

Zuecca Projects will stage a major exhibition of artist Hermann Nitsch, presented by Helmut Essl’s private collection in collaboration with Galerie Kandlhofer. The exhibition features Nitsch’s 20th Painting Action, which was originally presented in the Wiener Secession in 1987.

DRIFT will stage their first-ever indoor aerial drone performance, which explores the swarming dynamics of a school of fish encountering a predator. The work highlights the tensions that emerge between collective action and individual freedom. Social Sacrifice is being presented by Aorist, as part of their Venice: CodeX exhibition.

This is Ukraine: Defending Freedom

Presented by the PinchukArtCentre and Victor Pinchuk Foundation in partnership with the Office of the President of Ukraine and Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine, this official collateral event highlights the work of contemporary Ukrainian artists while also contextualizing Ukrainian history and culture with works by international artists, including JR.

Bodyscape spotlights Lee Kun-Yong's series of paintings of the same name. For these works, Lee approaches canvases from various angles, creating records of his physical relationships to his chosen medium. Some 20 new works created for the Venice exhibition will be on display, along with a video showing the process of production and chronicling the creative methodologies behind the series.
