Robert Whitman's "Seoul – New York: Kids Exchange (Local Report)" at CultureHub

CultureHub is proud to present Robert Whitman's Seoul – New York: Kids Exchange (Local Report) (2018) in association with Pace Gallery and our current exhibition Robert Whitman: 61. The video installation shows a live exchange between kids in Seoul and New York who joined together to observe what life may be for someone their age across the globe.

Part of the artist’s ongoing Local Report series, Seoul – New York: Kids Exchange (Local Report) grew from earlier works by Whitman. In News (1972), Whitman gave coins to people in Manhattan and sent them to payphones all over the city to make a report of what they saw from each phone, which were broadcast live on local radio. As payphones gave away to cell phones and radio gave way to the Internet, Whitman embraced these new tools and infused them within his practice – one grounded in exploring the elusiveness of perception and always challenging our ways of looking. 

In Seoul – New York: Kids Exchange (Local Report) the young participants shared short video and audio recordings that captured moments of their daily lives and environments. The interactions were recorded for the E.A.T. (Experiments in Art and Technology): Open-Ended exhibition at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul, which was on view May 26, 2018 - September 16, 2018. CultureHub LA Director, Iris Yujin Jeong, translated the exchange creating a three-way connection between New York, Seoul, and Los Angeles using LiveLab, a new open-source software for distance exchange developed by CultureHub.

Seoul – New York Kids Exchange (Local Report) runs for 45 minutes and will have two showings on Saturday December 1st at 4 PM and 7 PM.
