  • Li Songsong: Abstract
Pace Beijing is honored to present an exhibition of Li Songsong’s new paintings. It is his first exhibition with the gallery and a catalogue will accompany the exhibition. Li Songsong: Abstract will open on November 28 and will be on view through January 30, 2010. Li Songsong uses found photographs, mostly of historical events, as his starting point for his paintings. He specializes in exploring and deconstructing the stories behind these images allowing the viewer to free associate on the images meanings. Technically speaking, Li is a figurative painter who pushes oil paint to its sculptural limits. He builds heavy surfaces of oil paint – up to 7cm plus thick – with taches and strokes lifting off the canvas. These are interspersed with flat areas which are painted with wide, flat brushstrokes. It all creates a complex surface landscape that has the ability to shift your perspective from straight-on viewing to feeling as if you are seeing the topography from above. The works are painted on both canvas and, more recently, aluminum. The aluminum works are often painted on smaller panels and then stacked and attached like shingles. Abstract will present 17 paintings made in the last three years. Riffing on a wide-ranging group of subjects such as military defection to wildlife behavior, Li creates paintings of historical subjects that remain immensely topical. Li Songsong was born in 1973, graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts Department of Oil Painting. He currently lives and works in Beijing. His work has been included in: “Mahjong: Contemporary Chinese Art from the Sigg Collection”; “Christian Dior & Chinese Artists“; “Altered, Stitched and Gathered”, PS1 Art Center, New York, USA; “New World Order - Contemporary Installation Art and Photography from China “, Groningen Museum, Holland. Tangibles outweigh any abstractions that might have been promised in Li Songsong’s latest solo Show “Abstract” at Pace Beijing. Li Songsong’s trademark style of painting, an impasto of creamy pigment layered upon canvas as well as his signature content, a single photographic source spliced into juxtaposed fields of colours and canvas in an inchoate reconstruction of the original image find in its final object an overwhelming physicality. The texture presents itself so wrought and thick making it
