Senior Director, Art Resources

As part of the galley’s Leadership team, the Senior Director, Art Resources oversees all Art Resources Team (ART) departments and functions for Pace New York and East Hampton locations, including 540ART, 625ART, Shipping, Registrars and Media Arts. The Senior Director is responsible for all day-to-day art operations inclusive of inventory management and storage, registration and logistics, facilitation of viewings and execution of exhibitions and art fairs, and ensures the team’s efficient, prompt, cost-effective fulfillment of all projects and dealer office requests. In collaboration with the Art Resources Department Heads, the Senior Director is responsible for establishing, communicating and ensuring adherence to all Pace logistical policy, procedure and best practices for artwork packing, shipping, insurance, registration, installation, storage, etc. and serves in an advisory/trouble-shooting capacity for any related projects as needed. The Senior Director is accountable for the overall ART budget, including personnel, and contributes to budgets for Exhibitions & Art Fairs. Heading up the ART Management team, the Senior Director is focused on promoting holistic, proactive project management and collaborative problem solving whilst keeping the team focused on the bigger picture.

The Senior Director is an experienced people manager with a proven ability to gain the trust of and motivate diverse teams and effectively collaborate across departments to ensure a high-level of service delivery and overall team alignment with greater business goals. The Senior Director leads by example, maintaining and fostering a positive, supportive, solution-oriented team dynamic. A high level of experience and expertise in Fine Art logistics and related best practices as well as a passion for providing exceptional service to both internal and external clients is required. Reliability, a flexible attitude and calm demeanor, responsiveness, strong communications skills, verbal and written, excellent problem-solving skills, confidence interacting with sales staff, clients and artists and the ability to prioritize and juggle multiple tasks at once are essential.

What you'll be doing:

  • Lead New York Art Resources Team operations and functions spanning acquisitions, Registrar agreements, Fine Art insurance, conservation, preparatory work/artwork installations, logistics, condition reporting, warehousing, Pace Gallery Trucks, inventory management, viewings, exhibitions and art fairs execution and related administration.
  • Ensure high level of ART support for and timely execution of all sales, artist and client art-related needs and requests.
  • Partner with Sales, Global Exhibitions and other Pace departments to ensure holistic project management and fulfillment of artist projects.
  • Lead internal ART communications related to general operations, policy and procedure and emergency responses, in collaboration with HR and Leadership when appropriate.
  • Collaborate with regional ART staff to adapt all logistical Pace policy to regions and ensure compliance and global consistency.
  • Responsible for ensuring team and greater gallery compliance with all logistical policy, protocol and procedure. Work with ART Department Heads to troubleshoot and navigate any questions or issues with sales offices and clients while ensuring high-level client experience is maintained internally and externally.
  • Strategize and identify opportunities for operational process improvements, policy streamlining and overall cost savings; manage implementation and related communications.
  • Responsible for AR Team’s delivery of exceptional internal and external client experience at all touch-points, with focus on high level of service, courtesy, helpfulness, proactivity and attention to detail.
  • Serve as Pace ART point-person for all pre-planning of major projects, ART personnel issues, etc.
  • Manage and delegate department/dealer office/regional assignments and assignment of any special projects or additional responsibilities to overall AR Team.
  • Manage ART Department Head personnel calendar; approve all team hours, PTO, etc.
  • Promote and develop opportunities for cross-training to ensure greater team and individual team-member development.
  • Mentor, support and help to develop all AR Team members; provide constructive performance feedback and work to create a positive, team-oriented work environment within the team and the greater gallery.
  • Ensure rolling compensation equity assessment for Ops and ART inclusive of annual role reviews and maintaining up-to-date job descriptions for all team members. Establish, publish and keep current individual role salary bands, common career pathways and promotion markers for all roles & functions.
  • In collaboration with HR and greater Art Resources Team, contribute to new staff on-boarding and appropriate training, including post-training new-staff check-ins.
  • With other Art Resources Team Department Heads, evaluate the need for, plan and implement regular staff “continuing education” and/or ART “best practices” workshops.
  • With other Art Resources Team Department Heads, develop and implement systems and procedure for consistent gathering and uploading of physical artwork data to Palette.
  • With IT, continue to develop and implement systems to streamline service delivery and capture team activity.
  • Manage ART NY and personnel budgets; contribute to global ART budgets and Exhibitions & Art Fairs budgets.
  • Strategize and identify opportunities for consolidation, efficiency improvements and overall cost savings across managed area and ensure implementation.

What you'll bring:

  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in logistics and/or client services for either a museum, fine art gallery, auction house or fine art shipping agent
  • Minimum 5 years’ people-management experience; proven ability to effectively manage and empower diverse teams is essential
  • Must have proven experience and a high level of confidence with troubleshooting and solving complex art logistics issues
  • Must have a strong understanding of different artwork mediums and materials and related packing, shipping and installation sensitivities and the ability to translate that knowledge into actionable recommendations consistent with industry best practices
  • Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Office) and strong familiarity with database programs
  • Must possess a professional, positive attitude and the communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with and gain the trust of clients, artists, vendors and co-workers
  • Must be extremely detail-oriented and organized with a strong work ethic and the ability to manage a heavy workload while efficiently and effectively prioritizing responsibilities to meet deadlines and deliver results
  • Proven experience managing budgets is essential
  • BA in Art History or related field preferred
