Dubuffet in Amsterdam

Concurrent exhibitions at the Stedelijk and Rijksmuseum

Jean Dubuffet will be the focus of two concurrent exhibitions in Amsterdam opening July 1, 2017. Jean Dubuffet: The Deep End will present the entire collection of works by Dubuffet held by the Stedelijk Museum. Beginning with paintings and lithographs in the 1950's, and moving through the artist's shift to emphasis on paintings and sculptures in the 1960's, the exhibition is unified by the driving interrogation behind Dubuffet's artistic expression: "How can you capture thoughts that shoot off in all directions, in a painting? And how can you represent a world that is beyond objective reality in a work of art?"

To complement the survey exhibition, Jean Dubuffet in the Garden will be on view at the Rijksmuseum. Several large-scale sculptures installed in the open-air garden will illustrate "man amongst culture and nature," a theme central to Dubuffet's work. All sculptures are from 1968 onward, and many will be shown in the Netherlands for the first time.

Jean Dubuffet: The Deep End will be on view July 1 through September 24, 2017 at the Stedelijk Museum. For more information, visit their (opens in a new window) website.

Jean Dubuffet

Jean Dubuffet began painting at the age of seventeen and studied briefly at the Académie Julian, Paris. After seven years, he abandoned painting and became a wine merchant. During the thirties, he painted again for a short time, but it was not until 1942 that he began the work which has distinguished him as an outstanding innovator in postwar European painting. Dubuffet looked to the margins of the everyday—the art of prisoners, psychics, the uneducated, and the institutionalized—to liberate his own creativity, coining the term “Art Brut” as a reflection of the creative possibilities outside the conventions of the day.
