Richard Learoyd’s large-scale color and black-and-white portrait, landscape, and still-life photographs are celebrated for their balance of hyper-real and expressive qualities.

His in-studio custom-built camera obscura contains two room-like chambers connected by a bellows with an inset lens. Working with Ilfochrome color-reversal paper, Learoyd uses the camera obscura to render a single positive, unique image with minute detail without film negatives or digital technology. The slowness of the process builds the image over a short duration, imbuing the work with an auratic presence and giving the photographs an experiential component that plays on the artist’s interest in collective photographic memory.

Learoyd’s photographs were the subject of the solo exhibition Dark Mirror at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (2015) and were exhibited at the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, in 2016. His work is in the permanent collections of institutions worldwide, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
